As expected, the Pentagon Friday approved Apple’s iPhone and iPad devices for use on the United States military networks, Bloomberg has confirmed. The clearance sets the stage for Apple to compete with Samsung and BlackBerry for military sales. According to the report, the Defense Department today approved the use of Apple’s portable products running the

An iPhone has been blamed for a navigation error during a commercial airline flight in 2011, fueling the ongoing debate surrounding in-flight device usage. According to a Bloomberg report, an unnamed regional airliner experienced compass malfunctions when climbing past 9,000 feet, sending the aircraft off course until a flight attendant asked a passenger to turn off an iPhone.

If you thought the question over in-flight electronics was settled, think again. Although the Federal Aviation Administration is expected to announce in July whether to relax current rules governing in-flight use of iPhones, iPads and other devices, questions remain about their safety. Wednesday, Bloomberg recounted testimony from pilots and others calling into question whether some

BlackBerry World keeps on growing! At BlackBerry Live 2013, CEO Thorsten Heins announced that BlackBerry World was hosting 120,000 apps. Highlighted in the slides were new and upcoming titles like Modern Combat 4, Moog, Soundhound, and iHeartRadio, as well as some existing ones like Bloomberg and Blaq.  The high-demand apps are flocking to BlackBerry 10 – most recently, Skype to the Z10 by way of the recent 10.1 update, but there are plenty more that we’re going to be checking out in the showcase here at the show.

Some people aren’t lucky enough to be born with fully functioning hearts and they need an implant that can kickstart their heart should it stop beating. Said implant is called a defibrillator. A 14 year old girl by the name of Gianna Chien recently discovered that the magnets inside an iPad 2, used to attach Apple’s Smart Cover, can accidentally turn off these defibrillators. Magnets are bad for implanted defibrillators, this isn’t a new discovery. The iPad 2 onwards contains magnets, those little ones around the edges to hold down the Smart Cover and the top of the Smart Case. Combining these two pieces of information, a science project by 14-year-old Gianna Chien has determined that the iPad might not be the best thing to hold close to your chest if you have one of these devices implanted.

We’ve already heard from multiple sources that Apple’s vice president of design, Jony Ive, has been working on making iOS flatter and more refined, but now he’s also rumored to be working on brand new Mail and Calendar apps as well. It’s not clear right now whether a complete revamp of such core personal information management software would be ready in time for iOS 7 this year, or for iOS 8 next year, but the focus sounds interesting. According to Bloomberg: Ive, 46, has begun revamping iPhone and iPad applications, shunning realistic images, such as wood bookshelves for the Newsstand feature, and he’s exploring more dramatic changes to the e-mail and calendar tools, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans are private. More than just re-skins, as the changes in system-wide interface design seems to be at this point, Ive is also said to be re-thinking software usability, the way he’s traditionally rethought hardware. Software design involves the graphical style of images on the screen, as well as the deeper experience of how a user progresses through a given task, such as the steps needed for deleting an e-mail or entering a calendar item

Yesterday, according to Bloomberg, Thorsten Heins dropped the following snipped:  ”In five years I don’t think there’ll be a reason to have a tablet anymore.”  As usual, the media is jumping all over this with headlines that take the comments to an extreme.  Hey, whatever gets the click for those guys. I’m all about the balance.  We reached out to BlackBerry to get some kind of clarification on this statement, hoping to included it in this story, but we’ve not heard back yet.  When we do (and we always do), we’ll update the post. Anyway, I suppose it’s possible that Thorsten Heins really believes the entire tablet market will come crashing down.  It’s possible, but highly unlikely that he believes this.  It’s much more likely that this comment had an accompanying context which has been totally cut out of the quote. Remember folks .

BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins has been busy with interviews of late. We saw him sit down with Bloomberg, talking about the BlackBerry Q10 and how it became the fastest selling handset at Selfridges, amongst other things. Thorsten was asked about when we should see the BlackBerry Q10 launch in the U.S., following the successful week launch in the U.K. and he states that the U.S.

Bloomberg reports that Nokia Growth Partners, the venture capital and investment arm, has made an investment in Pelican Imaging, a company which is developing array camera technology solutions for smartphones. This technology, which recently came to wider public attention through the Lytro camera, uses a microlens array to create a light-field camera, also called a ‘plenoptic’ camera, that can capture 4D light field information about a scene. This light field information effectively records extra data about the light hitting the camera and allows for additional processing techniques to be applied. For example, depth information can be obtained for every pixel, allowing the focus of an image to be changed after it has been captured (i.e.

If you haven’t yet watched the interview with Thorsten Heins on Bloomberg, you should definitely watch the short clip. Adam already posted a summary here and the video is embedded. “We expect several tens of millions of units”, said a confident BlackBerry CEO on camera. That’s a huge statement to make, and from what we’ve seen of the man so far, he is a man of action. He is not one to exaggerate and make crazy promises.
