Bay Area app developer Smule has amassed an army of mobile instruments, but really, what fun are all those music makers without a little good old fashioned jamming? Today, the company’s offering up the simply named Guitar, an app that lets you strum along to songs recorded through its equally straightforwardly named Sing. At present, the company has hand-picked a dozen or so singers, letting you play along (though expect that number to increase, as time goes on), becoming “the first pair of [Smule] apps that actually talk to each other,” according to the company. Using the app is pretty straightforward for anyone who’s messed around with Guitar Hero and its ilk, letting you know when to strum via swipe through a dynamically scrolling layout.

The Nexus Q was one of Google’s rare misses. The ‘first social streaming media player’ was announced along with the Nexus 7 back at Google I/O 2012, while the Nexus 7 became quite a success story and is probably what has led to the emergence of the 7-8 inch budget tablet market. The fate of the Nexus

Sporting flat, tangle free cabling, a handy clip and MEMS microphone, every Windows Phone owner will find the new kit useful when out and about. The earphones will come with a three-button control setup, which will function differently per operating system. As one can see from the image above, they’re gorgeous looking too. ASUS’ Fonepad has been making its way around the world with a 1.2GHz Intel Atom Z2420 processor and 16GB of built-in storage, but apparently there’s a need for covering one’s face with a beefier version. Announced in Taiwan earlier today, the 7-inch tabletphone will be offered with a faster 1.6GHz Z2460 plus 32GB of memory (with micro-SD expansion as before). This new model will retail for NT$10,900 locally, which works out to be about US$360; whereas the original model will still be available for NT$8,990 or about US$300 (which is, by the way, a tad more expensive than the UK price). We’ll let you know when ASUS comes back with more information regarding availability in other regions. Filed under: Cellphones, Tablets, Mobile, ASUS Comments Via: Engadget Chinese

With Nokia set to unveil a new Lumia lineup next week, you could be forgiven for forgetting about the company’s flagship phone from last year. However, AT&T customers still holding on to their Lumia 900s have cause for celebration in the shape of the long-awaited Windows Phone 7.8 update, which has finally been made available for all months after Nokia released it in other regions. While some may have already installed the update through other means, all owners of the AT&T variant should be able to get it now through the Zune PC client. Engadget reports that there is an advert for the Nokia Lumia 928 in the latest issue of the US edition of Vanity Fair magazine. The advert has a tag line of “capture the highlights” and mentions Nokia’s PureView technology, Carl Zeiss optics, and optical image stabilisation. The magazine advert, like the billboard advert for the Lumia 928 thatwas spotted in Oakland last week, includes both Verizon and Windows Phone branding. Following weeks of rumors and an apparent billboard ad, Nokia has launched a teaser site for its upcoming Lumia 928 handset. The site doesn’t reveal all the specifications and details about the Lumia 928, but it confirms the naming and follows a recent magazine ad noting its launch on Verizon. The printed ad confirms Nokia’s focus on the low-light abilities of the Lumia 928, with a mention of PureView, optical image stabilization, and the typical Carl Zeiss lens. Nokia CEO Stephen Elop recently hinted that a new Lumia would gain hero status at a major US carrier, and it appears the Lumia 928 launch is imminent on Verizon.
