The Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai is perhaps the world’s most luxurious hotel, and the latest addition continues that tradition. The seven-star hotel is now giving 24-carat gold-plated iPads from Gold & Co to guests for use during their stay. The iPads will act as a ‘virtual concierge’, offering information on restaurants in the hotel, as well as spa treatments and butler services. They carry the Burj Al Arab’s logo on the back and they are available for purchase in the hotel’s boutique.

For a long time, the only devices Apple has ever extensively serviced in-store have been Macs, with some requiring mail-out repairs. If recent rumors are to be believed as true, Apple plans on extending in-store repair options to iOS devices. According to a report by AppleInsider, Apple will begin actually repairing iPhones and iPads in-store instead of swapping them out for replacement refurbished devices in the very near future. Anyone who has ever taken a broken or defective iPhone or iPad into Apple is already aware that as it stands now, you will be given a replacement device in place of your current one. The fee is based on whether or not you’re in or out of warranty and whether the issue is caused by accidental damage

For many iOS users, the concept of backing up their iPhones and iPads to ones PC is a familiar one — just plug it into iTunes, hit a button, and wait around for an undetermined amount of time. For Android users, however, the idea of syncing one’s phone to a PC may be a bit more foreign. Back in April, Samsung quietly launched SideSync software in order to both back up a user’s phone while also allowing a laptop’s mouse to dictate actions on the mobile. Things like copy / paste and drag / drop can be accessed while connected, and users can even pull a virtual copy of their phone up while mousing around on their laptop

Blockbuster announced its entrance back into the video streaming game in January after pledging to exit that market late last year. Today, Blockbuster’s reincarnation as a video streaming service continues, as the company rolled out its On Demand app for iOS, bringing “thousands” of movies to iPads and iPhones running iOS 4.3 and up. By adding Apple devices to the fold, Blockbuster can now shoot movies to the majority of mobile devices — previously it was only available for Android (plus Mac, PC, Roku and Samsung Smart TVs).

If someone steals your iPhone and gets access to all the photos you’ve taken of your kids playing in the backyard, that sucks, but if your iPhone gets stolen and someone gets access to the codes needed to launch a nuclear missile, you’re in deep trouble. That’s why, traditionally, government employees have been given BlackBerrys. They’ve been tested, multiple times, to be highly secure, so they’re allowed in places like the Pentagon. The US Department of Defense, which has been preparing to allow its employees to use iPhones and certain Android devices for some time, is expected to grant security approval for devices from Apple and Samsung in the coming weeks. There will be separate security approvals for iOS and Samsung Galaxy device. DoD employees will be allowed to use iPhones and iPads for non-classified communications like email. According to the Wall Street Journal: Separately, DISA is expected to rule that Apple’s latest operating system, iOS 6, conforms to a different security-requirement guide, these people said.

Our armed forces began embracing Android and iOS some time ago, and now it appears that the US Department of Defense is finally jumping on the bandwagon, too. The Wall Street Journal reports that the DoD will be announcing security approvals for Samsung Galaxy handsets, iPhones and iPads in the next couple weeks — allowing them to join BlackBerry in the government’s secure smartphone stable. Apparently, Samsung’s approval was facilitated by its Knox security platform, which has been deemed secure enough to allow it to be used to send and receive internal emails, and Apple devices running iOS 6 and up are also expected to get the go-ahead for nonclassified communications. So, people of the Pentagon, it looks like it’s only a matter of time before you can put down your BB7 handset and pick up a smartphone with a more modern OS. A new report is out this afternoon, claiming the US Department of Defense is going to grant security approvals for Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones, as well as Apple’s iPhones and iPads running iOS 6 in the coming weeks. The move is separate from the mobile device implementation plan that the Pentagon announced back in February, and

Apple, which for years has acted as an engine for much of the tech industry, may report slowing profits for the first time in a decade. Talk of a slowdown comes as the consumer tech giant deals with the triple-threat of slimmer profit margins, falling iPhone demand and heightened competition. We’re still waiting to see Cox’s next generation cable TV-to-mobile streaming app, but right now it’s released a version of its existing Cox TV Connect app for Android. Available on iPads since the end of 2011 and on iPhone / iPod touch since the end of last year, it’s finally made the trek to a “select” group of Android tablets, consisting of the Nexus 7 and Samsung Galaxy 2 / Galaxy Note slates. A support document also mentions Amazon’s Kindle Fire family, however the app isn’t in its store as of this posting. For those not familiar, it’s a free app for subscribers that lets them watch a selection of live TV channels while connected to their home wireless network, and view listings anywhere

According to a freshly leaked roadmap, Office for iOS and Android, which have been rumored time and time again, won’t be out until October 2014 at the earliest. I’m sure folks are hoping to take Microsoft’s beloved suite for a spin on their iPads and Nexus 7s, but that’s a pretty hefty wait. If you

Best Buy has slashed pricing on third-generation iPad models by thirty percent, bringing the price down to $315 for the 16GB Wi-Fi models. Comparable refurbished units are available for $379 directly from Apple. However, the iPads are only available via in-store pickup and it appears that selection varies widely between stores. Potential purchasers can check availability for individual models at their local Best Buy locations and reserve them for in-store pickup on the website. The current fourth-generation iPad was a modest upgrade from the third-generation that Best Buy has discounted
