Vudu has launched an update for its iOS video player that adds support for downloading movies for offline viewing. Previously, users were required to stream all of their content from within the app, however, now they may select to download any content at various qualities for offline use. Other changes include closed captioning support for the iPhone, a simplified Player, and numerous bug fixes. VUDU Player is a free Universal app that can be downloaded from the App Store.

Google has announced that its Checkout service will be closing down in about 6 months, while some of its features will transfer to the new Google Wallet service. Apple’s iTunes has become the pinnacle in digital sales for music. However, BlackBerry could be well on their way to reaching closer and closer to iTunes marketshare. “20 per cent of overall purchases on BlackBerry World is music,” Charlie Miller, BlackBerry’s Director of Alliances said to TrustedReviews, he added: “That’s just music, not movie and TV and that’s a lot higher than some.” “The breakdown of sales is a really interesting trend that we follow,” Miller said. “Right now, we see a higher proportion of album sales than is typical. Still the primary purchase is singles but we do see a very high number of album sales coming through.” Miller says their music sales are notably higher than some of their competitors. “I can’t comment on the other guys, but what I can say is that proportionally that is a very high number,” said Miller.

Anatolia News Agency reports that Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan visited Apple yesterday as part of a tour of Silicon Valley companies ahead of the country’s move to purchase 10.6 million tablets for its schoolchildren. Ahead of the education tablet bid, Apple is in the midst of a significant push into the Turkish market, having launched the iTunes Store for music and movies there last December and begun hiring for future retail stores in the country

Apple recently released iTunes 11.0.3 with a number of cosmetic improvements including an updated MiniPlayer and songs view. However, this release is more than just a pretty face, bringing a number of security patches which address a wide range of vulnerabilities. Even users not interested in the visual treatments will want to grab this update. Out of all 40 of the vulnerabilities listed in Apple’s article detailing the security content of the update, only one of them affected Mac users. The remaining 39 vulnerabilities addressed in this iTunes release only affected Windows users.
