Microsoft’s SkyDrive cloud storage service may soon be getting support for 3D panoramas using Photosynth technology. Earlier in May, Microsoft updated SkyDrive with an emphasis on photos, creating a chronologically ordered “All Photos” view and accepting full-resolution uploads from Windows Phone 8. Now, the highly reliable LiveSide reports that SkyDrive will also allow users to upload and view 3D panoramas. The new feature will be based on Photosynth’s toolset, supporting interactive panoramas stitched together from photos and videos. LiveSide notes that it’s not clear whether SkyDrive will support synths, a kind of inverse panorama that captures multiple sides of a single building or other object

For years, publishing games in the South American nation of Brazil was a laborious and mysterious process. While most countries allow developers to publish games with no additional certification beyond those of the platform holder, a few states like Brazil, South Korea, and Russia add on their own approval processes. As you’d expect, the challenge of navigating Brazil’s certifications without speaking Brazilian Portuguese has long prevented many games from releasing in that territory. Thankfully, the Brazilian government revised their certification policies a few months ago.

Microsoft’s recently updated YouTube app has been withdrawn from the Windows Phone Store. It is set to be replaced by an earlier version of the app, which provides a simple shortcut to the YouTube mobile site, a stark contrast to the feature-rich nature of the withdrawn version. However, a statement from YouTube communication manager MattMcLernon indicates that the two companies will be “working together to update the new YouTube app for Windows Phone to enable compliance with YouTube’s API terms of service”, suggesting that, in the wake of their public disagreement, the two companies have now arrived at some form of compromise over the YouTube app on Windows Phone.

The smartphone OS market share for Q1 2013 is led by Android and followed by iOS, while everyone else lies at distant numbers. Microsoft now has a small victory to celebrate as it surpassedBlackberry in terms of market share and became a distant 3rd largest smartphone platform. It appears that Nokia’s effort in increasing Windows Phone’s marketshare is being more effective than that of Microsoft’s efforts. I am a hardcore Android user and have been using it for the past 4 years, along with 2 years of iOS experience.

In episode 64 of the AAWP Insight Podcast, hosted by Ewan and Rafe, has a distinct Xbox theme, thanks to the 8 “new” Xbox Live titles for Windows Phone and the launch of the Xbox One. However, there’s still time for us to share some thoughts on Ewan’s Eurovision Android holiday, a potential new Nokia Windows Phone device, and the Google – Microsoft spat over the recently released YouTube app.

Australian carrier Telstra has released some information about the near forgotten Windows Phone 7.8 update coming to WP 7.5 handsets. Greed City, the Windows Phone 8 exclusive location-based game from Torchbear creator Lighthouse Game Studio, seems to be growing almost as fast as a real city. Since we first reported on the game in April, the number of players has jumped exponentially. That surge in players and the businesses they create was slowing down the game (which requires internet connectivity) in a big way. Thankfully, Lighthouse has just published a major update that increases the speed of checking in to businesses and leaving comments on news feed items tenfold. You can now boot the game up, check in to your businesses, and get on with your day quickly and free of hassle once more.

Here’s a nice bit of ‘single screen tactical action’ for the weekend. Tiny Space puts you in control of one of three space stations, all with the goal of eliminating the other two. At your disposal is a constantly (but slowly) replenishing fleet of space fighters to attack the other stations. But if you attack too hard, you’ll leave your station undefended.

Another week, another unboxing and first impressions! If this didn’t take so much work, we could get used to this many devices coming out (mostly from Nokia). This week is the low-cost but high-value Lumia 521, T-Mobile svelte variant of the Lumia 520. The phone ranges from just $30 on T-Mo’s “uncontract” to a still super cheap $150 with no strings attached

Google is announcing today that it’s working together with Microsoft on a new YouTube application for Windows Phone. Following a fight with Microsoft over its unauthorized YouTube app, the pair appear to have resolved their differences. Google demanded that Microsoft should remove its app by May 22nd, but Microsoft issued an update to address some of Google’s concerns earlier this week.

Nokia sometimes includes third party apps within its Nokia collection section of the Windows Phone Store. Apps that receive this treatment generally get more downloads, but the unfortunate side effect is that it can result in a duplicate Windows Store entry for that app. This can be an issue if a new version of the app comes out because the two entries get out of sync (i.e. the version in the Nokia collection is left behind)

I love my Apple TV, but what I’d love even more is a healthy dose of regional content on it. AirPlay is OK, but I see it more a means to an end in certain circumstances, not an integral part of my experience. When I’m relaxing watching TV, I don’t want to have to reach for my iPhone or iPad, or even my Mac in order to put something on there to watch. The major free-to-air channels in the UK — BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 — all have on-demand video services

A few weeks ago I wrote an editorial piece on how 2013 was finally turning into the year of Windows Phone (after numerous false starts). There turns out to be another facet though that I missed in my analysis, which I’d like to address here. Besides increased advertising, impressive hardware, a maturing ecosystem and a reinvigorated Nokia who has hit their stride, Microsoft is using another tactic: direct action. It’s a fascinating change in strategy from previous years where Microsoft took on a more “hands off” approach, often leaving marketing up to their OEM and carrier partners. Now, in 2013, Microsoft is asserting themselves a lot more directly (and it’s not isolated to just Windows Phone as the recent Surface rumor suggests).
