(Credit: CNET) Apple likely sold around 35.5 million iPhone last quarter, according to Piper Jaffay analyst Gene Munster. In an investors note out today, the analyst cited the 4 million iPhones activated by Verizon last quarter, representing a 56 percent share of the carrier’s smartphone sales and inline with his expectations. Though that number is down from the December quarter’s 63 percent, Munster believes such a decline is expected since the holiday quarter was the first full quarter of iPhone 5 sales, a period when the phone’s share of the market is typically at its strongest. “The Mar-13 Verizon results show stability in iPhone’s franchise in the US which is a positive, but we caution the International wild card,” Munster said. “Separately, given we only have the Verizon numbers, it’s difficult to predict total iPhones sold in the Mar-13 quarter.

(Credit: CNET) A low-cost iPhone could see unit sales of 75 million in 2014, projects Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. In an investors note released today, Munster said he expects Apple to sell a $300 non-subsidized iPhone starting in September. Such a device is likely to trigger a 30 percent cannibalization rate, which means that for every three low-cost iPhones sold, one full-price iPhone is cannibalized.

Although it sometimes seems like every teen has an iPhone, we are not quite there, according to new research. Some 48 percent of teens say they own the Apple smartphone with 62 percent expecting to buy an iPhone as their next handset. The 48 percent of teen-owned iPhones is up from 40 percent registered during

It may not be the biggest percentage in the world, but a recent survey by analysts Piper Jaffray polling 1,600 teens from high-income and 3,600 teens from average-income families found that 5% of those expect their next phone to be a Windows Phone, nearly a 1/4 of the Android number and more than double that of

A new poll by stock analysts Piper Jaffray shows very little change since last fall in the status of the iPhone as the coolest electronic device among teens. Nearly half of all of the 5,200 teenagers polled said they already owned an iPhone, a rise of eight percent from the previous survey. Some 62 percent said that they plan on buying an iPhone as their next device (about the same number as said that last time). Only 23 percent of teens indicated they were planning to buy an Android phone, but this did represent a one percent gain from the fall.

Another survey, this time from Piper Jaffray tech sector analyst Gene Munster, adds to a number of other surveys of the US mobile web traffic landscape and finds that the iOS platform both dominates and is growing its share of user engagement in Internet-related mobile use. As with the other studies, Munster’s analysis of a hand-picked list of 10 of the top 100 mobile websites found that iOS traffic accounts for around 65 percent of mobile visits during the past two months, while Android made up only 30 percent of mobile traffic.

We’ve chided Piper Jaffray’s well-known resident Apple analyst Gene Munster for his repeated predictions of a standalone Apple television set being just around the corner. However, this time we’re giving Munster credit for trying to deflate the hype balloon which has taken Apple stock and consumers for a ride fueled by unreal expectations. The analyst

(Credit: Screenshot by Lance Whitney/CNET) Is Siri more responsive in iOS 6 than it was in iOS 5? A new study from Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster uncovered a slight improvement in the voice assistant in the latest version of iOS. Based on the analyst’s testing, Siri understood 91 percent of queries under iOS 6, compared with 89 percent in iOS 5. Further, Siri correctly answered 77 percent of those queries under iOS 6, vs 76 percent in iOS 5. In general, Siri was adept at finding local businesses and understanding operating system commands but not so good at tracking down general information or leading users to helpful commerce-related results

iPhone 5 stocks have seen “dramatic improvements in availability,” according to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. Last night a team at Piper conducted checks with 100 US Apple Stores, and found that AT&T models were available at 82 percent of them, while Verizon models were ready at 72 percent. Sprint iPhone 5s were in stock 92 percent of the time.

The iPhone 5. (Credit: CNET ) Apple’s iPhone sales in the third quarter probably won’t break the bank, but they may be higher than anticipated, says Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. Based on the number of iPhones activated by Verizon last quarter, the analyst believes Apple’s non-iPhone 5 sales were stronger than expected. Verizon announced yesterday that it had activated 3.1 million iPhones in the third quarter, up 15 percent from the prior quarter and higher than Piper Jaffray’s estimate of 2.5 million.

When Apple announced sales of 5 million iPhone 5 units this morning for the device’s launch weekend, we noted the number was significantly under the up to 10 million predicted by many analysts. While Apple previously announced pre-orders for iPhone 5 doubled the iPhone 4S with 2 million in 24 hours, sales only grew roughly

How important is 4G LTE to you? In a new study by Piper Jaffray, nearly half of the consumers surveyed don’t actually feel it’s that important, believe it or not. For those with fairly basic needs, like checking Facebook or browsing a few web pages, I suppose that makes sense. The true benefits of higher-speed

Should Apple launch its fifth version of the iPhone in September, the company is likely to sell 6 million to 10 million of those devices in the last 10 days of the month, according to an analyst. Based on numerous news reports pointing to a September launch of the iPhone 5, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster estimated that Apple will sell 26 million to 28 million devices overall in its September quarter. That projection is well ahead of current estimates, which account for slowing iPhone sales and roughly 22 million to 23 million units in the quarter.

What an interesting turn of events – Oracle just sued a notorious patent troll Lodsys, seeking invalidation of four of Lodsys’ patents. In fact, these are all the patents Lodsys owns – if Oracle wins, Lodsys will have nothing to threaten innocent developers with.If you haven’t been following the Lodsys drama for the past year+, let me step back for a brief history lesson. Lodsys LLC, a Texas patent troll shell corporation, has been harassing various developers since early 2011, including many with Android apps in the Play Store. The patents Lodsys used to threaten Android developers, large and small, are 7,222,078, to which everyone refers to as simply “078″ and 7,620,565 (“565″).
