One thing noticeably missing from Google I/O 2013 was any hardware news. Many people had anticipated that we’d see a new Nexus 7 tablet unveiled at this year’s event, especially when you consider that the original Nexus 7 was unveiled at Google I/O 2012. Sadly, however, Google kept quiet on its budget tablet offerings at

It’s surely not the first contraption to bring an iDevice to a weapon, but the Inteliscope does appear to be one of the first to take itself seriously. It’s designed to secure an iPhone 4 / 4S / 5 or iPod touch to any firearm with a Picatinny (Mil-STD-1913) or Weaver tactical rail, enabling shooters to peek around corners with no head exposure. Naturally, the mount itself wouldn’t be all that attractive without an accompanying app.

Thursday, May 16th marks the US premiere of the 12th Star Trek flick: Star Trek Into Darkness. Like the 2009 film simply titled Star Trek, the new Into Darkness is directed by JJ Abrams and follows the adventures of the crew of the [new] original Enterprise under the command of a reimagined Captain Kirk played by Chris Pine. While the action-oriented direction of the last film, cockier Kirk, aggressive lens flares, and design of the new old U.S.S. Enterprise might have ruffled a few feathers, the 2009 entry kicked up the production quality of Star Trek films by an order of magnitude or two

We test the strength of Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3 at CES 2013 On the surface, smartphones screens made of sapphire sound superb — they’re naturally strong, extremely scratch resistant, can withstand flexing, and transmit light very well. That’s the widely accepted story, at least. Disputing this view is Corning, makers of the Gorilla Glass material that covers a majority of smartphone screens. Back in 2006, the BBC took 250 engineers and locked them into several rooms in a mansion. But this wasn’t the scene for an epic horror movie: instead, it set the stage for researchers to group together and focus on a number of projects. The BBC had a stack of ideas, but it “didn’t really know what to do with them,” explains Alia Sheikh, director of BBC R&D Production Labs. “We did the math and we worked out that if we split everyone up into teams of five and took an idea off the stack, and then locked those five people into a room for a week, they could work on an idea — we pretty much had enough ideas to do a whole year.” So Sheikh and her team kept the managers away and shipped in pizza to ensure the researchers were focused on… Continue reading…

It’s been awhile since I’ve had the chance to write a letter to our audience, keeping you posted on things and throwing whatever is not in and of itself newsworthy into a post. Bloomberg reports that Nokia Growth Partners, the venture capital and investment arm, has made an investment in Pelican Imaging, a company which is developing array camera technology solutions for smartphones. This technology, which recently came to wider public attention through the Lytro camera, uses a microlens array to create a light-field camera, also called a ‘plenoptic’ camera, that can capture 4D light field information about a scene. This light field information effectively records extra data about the light hitting the camera and allows for additional processing techniques to be applied. For example, depth information can be obtained for every pixel, allowing the focus of an image to be changed after it has been captured (i.e.

There’s more than what’s usually visible in the Windows Phone universe. When we talk about Windows Phones these days, we always talk about Samsung, HTC, Nokia, and sometimes Huawei. But if you remember, there was another name briefly manifested in our sight, only to disappear quietly later: Alcatel. Back in last December we reported a low cost Windows Phone called Alcatel One

Production of a next-generation iPhone — commonly labeled the iPhone 5S — may be delayed, Reuters says. Japanese and Taiwanese supplier sources tell the news agency that 5S production was originally expected to start in June, but that Apple may be encountering manufacturing issues. In particular, one source says that Apple is building a fingerprint sensor into the phone, but having trouble finding a coating material that doesn’t interfere. The company is known to be working on fingerprint technology, and some past reports have hinted that the 5S could mark its debut.

Yet another iPad 5 case has leaked and, again, several photos of it suggest that the next generation iPad from Apple will be thinner than the current model. The cases pictured above were obtained by Engadget, which spotted them at the Hong Kong Electronics Fair. It’s hard for us to judge from the photos alone, but Engadget said

Earlier in the month, Wall Street Journal reported that Apple plans to start production of the next iPhone, dubbed iPhone 5S this quarter, indicating that it may be gearing up for a possible summer launch. As a follow up to that report, WSJ now claims that Foxconn, Apple’s manufacturing partner in China, is going on a hiring spree after the post-holiday freeze to ramp up production for Apple’s new iPhone.
