Samsung does make some great displays, for sure, though while they’ve taken on the Retina Display on mobile, their laptop displays pale in comparison next to the MacBook Pro’s Retina Display. In truth, only Google’s Chromebook Pixel and Toshiba’s new Kirabook can really sit at the same table as the Retina MacBook Pro. Samsung is looking to change all that with the announcement of their new panel with a staggering 276 PPI. To get to that number, the new panel boasts a 3200 x 1800 resolution at 13.3-inches

Would you still buy a non-Retina MacBook? The Retina MacBook Pro has been with us for almost a full year now. The 15-inch version came to us by way of WWDC 2012, and frankly was unlike any laptop computer ever seen. The incredible 2880×1800 resolution Retina Display had to be seen to be believed, and just like that Apple had the best laptop display ever produced. The Retina MacBook Pro now also comes in a 13-inch form factor too, and the display is equally stunning to look at.

A cryptographic component in iOS 6 has received FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standard) 140-2 Level 1 security certification from the US National Institute of Standards and Technology, says TUAW. In particular, the NIST says that when running in FIPS mode, iOS 6′s CoreCrypto Kernel Module 3.0 “generates cryptographic keys whose strengths are modified by available entropy.” The module is identified as “a software cryptographic module running on a multi-chip standalone mobile device and provides services intended to protect data in transit and at rest.”

The official Twitter for Mac application hasn’t seen an update in a while, but the one that dropped today brings something that has been long overdue. The headline feature upgrade is that now, Twitter for Mac is finally Retina Display ready, meaning it looks oh so much better on the Retina MacBook Pro range. And it really does. Beautifying the app isn’t all that’s gone on though. In addition, the app icon and iconography has been updated, and the Tweet Composer has been given some love with a new design and the ability to post pictures to Twitter’s own picture service

Last week while Mark Gurman and I were complaining about those little imperfections that mar the otherwise fantastic Retina MacBook Pro experience, Chad Coleman passed along a tip from Erv Walter on how to make the Retina MacBook Pro wake from sleep faster. This is for those times when you lift the lid, see the password entry field, but can’t actually enter a password for what feels like 10 seconds or so. I mentioned it on MacBreak Weekly on Tuesday, and so many people found it helpful I figured I’d mention it here as well. From Ewal.net: What is actually happening is that these new MacBook Pro’s (and recent MacBook Air’s) have a new powersaving mode which Apple calls standby. Standby mode kicks in after the laptop has been in normal sleep mode for about an hour.

Apple is planning to launch multiple iPhones in June or July this year, supply chain sources tell RBC Capital Markets analyst Amit Daryanani. The sources don’t have any information beyond that, but Daryanani says he expects Apple to launch an iPhone 5S and a low-cost iPhone. “The low-end iPhone will have the same 4-inch form factor as the iPhone 5, but will have a plastic casing and no Retina display,” he predicts.

The Digital Negative app comes with a module where photos can be edited. (Credit: Cypress Innovations) Photo enthusiasts already pleased with the iPhone’s generally superior camera can be forgiven for getting excited about the possibility of shooting photos in the higher-end raw file format. Cypress Innovations on Wednesday released a new app called Digital Negative that might raise that very hope by offering a way to take photos that are stored in Adobe Systems’ DNG format for raw photos. Alas, although the app does store uncompressed image data, it doesn’t actually store the raw data taken straight from the sensor.
