When Huawei revealed the Ascend Mate at CES this year, it felt like smartphones had reached an end point — they surely couldn’t get any larger. We’ve since been proven wrong by Samsung’s Galaxy Mega 6.3, but the 6.1-inch Ascend Mate has gone on sale first, and it’s every bit as intimidating as it was in January. The question is whether or not Huawei has more than just size on its side. Is this nearly tablet-sized device worth putting in our pockets, and can it fend off the suddenly tiny-looking Galaxy Note II and Optimus G Pro

ABC has updated its player app with a new name and live streaming capabilities, allowing a limited set of users to watch ABC programming live. While the rest of the app remains largely unchanged, still letting users stream previous episodes of ABC’s shows, a new section called Live has been added to the toolbar. In most of the country, the section will simply let the user know that live streaming is not available in their area on the top half of the screen, and ABC’s primetime schedule on the bottom half. For New York City and Philadelphia viewers however, live programming will be present, allowing them to watch live ABC programming on their iOS device as long as they remain within their city. ABC plans to expand the availability of live streaming in the near future.

Two Galaxy Notes and two Optimus Vus later, LG’s ready to tackle the giant-sized smartphone niche, this time without the category’s defining accessory: a stylus. The Optimus G Pro, part of the company’s performance line, was a surprise when we first laid eyes and hands on it: it’s a 5.5-inch embodiment of lessons learned, not just from LG’s past endeavors, but also from Samsung’s. That the device would ever make it out of South Korea and into the US was an uncertainty. And by entering the market now, the G Pro risks coming off as a stopgap between the Note II and III, as well as LG’s own flagship G line.

Microsoft dropped the biggest hint at the return of a Start button to Windows 8 today. Speaking at the Wired Business Conference in New York, Windows chief Julie Larson-Green reiterated that Microsoft is looking to change certain elements of its upcoming Windows 8 update, codenamed Blue, in response to user feedback. “Some of it is about not just about time on task or how quickly they learn it… some of it is just in the comfort level that people have.” That comfort level has left some confused, and others calling for the return of the Start button to Windows 8.

Gravicon is a new game for our Windows Phone 7.x and 8 devices that is a bubble burst styled game with a new approach. You still have to match three or more of the same styled bubbles but with Gravicon, the bubbles act like bubbles. That is they float to the bottom of the screen, as a bubble would, and if you rotate your Windows Phone around they shift and bounce around with the movements. Gravicon is an interesting play on a classic mobile game that definitely grows on you. The main menu for Gravicon has options to jump into the game, access the game’s settings, share the game, exit the game and view the about screen.

Apple’s Passbook app and system lets you use passes that contain time-sensitive or location-sensitive information. For example, you might have a pass that triggers when you enter a specific store, like Target. Or, you might have airplane tickets going through Passbook, if you use that specific airline’s iOS app. The ideal here is that the

Marketplace Dashboard for Windows Phone 8 is an app designed to help developers keep track of the apps and games they have in the Windows Phone Store. The app gives you a view of your apps including crash count, submission status and download counts. Marketplace Dashboard has main pages that will list your published works and a page for those apps/games still in the certification process. The paid, version of Marketplace Dashboard, which is currently on sale, allows each app to be pinned to your Start Screen that will display app stats. The developer notes that since there is no public Windows Phone Store API, Marketplace Dashboard relies on screen scraping for much of the data it delivers

Ellen DeGeneres has released an iPhone version of a game she likes to play on her show called Heads Up. It’s simply a word guessing game where your friends try to get you to say the word on the screen by giving you hints. Only with Heads Up, you hold the phone above your head and it records video of your friend giving hints. You have sixty seconds to guess as many words as you can. Since you’ll be holding your iPhone above your head and you’re not allowed to look at the screen, Heads Up includes some great controls for new cards: tilt your iPhone face down when you get a word correct and tilt it up to pass

Interval is an Windows Phone 8 app that puts an alarm, stopwatch and timer all under one roof. The app has live tile support, a clock view and a nice selection (all be it small) of alarm tones. Admittedly, alarm apps can be a little on the boring side but Interval does a nice job of spreading everything out on three main pages and even has a Sleep Cycle alarm feature designed to keep pace with your 90 minute sleep cycles.  Interval could use a little fine tuning, but all in all, it’s not a bad option for those looking for a Windows Phone 8 alarm app.

Showing off their partnership with the Mercedes AMG Petronas race team, the new ads for the BlackBerry Q10 are looking pretty hot.  The videos – ranging from BlackBerry Balance to Q10 design to BBM Screen Share – show off the Q10 and some top features all while being compared to the awesome machine that is the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 car.  The promos draw some great comparisons that totally make sense and really make you think about just how many other similarities there are.
