The VLC team has published two more mockups in a Kickstarter update post so those who are planning to back the project can see exactly which direction they’re heading down. The project is to bring VLC to Windows RT and Windows Phone, which would prove to be a massive bonus for those on either platform who rely on the media player. In case you haven't heard, there is currently a Kickstarter campaign which is trying to fund a Windows 8 VLC Player app to be published in the Windows Store. VLC Player is one of the best video players for the Windows desktop thanks to its wide-ranging codec support and its optimized performance, so naturally bringing it into the world of Metro is going to be a wet dream for video buffs. Today, VideoLAN has published an update to their Kickstarter page and commemorates passing the 70% mark of their goal by sharing the first look at what VLC Player for Windows 8 will look like. Granted the team is simply calling these a “first draft” design, but we like what we see.

The team behind popular media player VLC have launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for creating new Windows 8 and Windows RT versions of the program. Currently VLC runs in the desktop mode of Windows 8 without any issues, but several members behind the project are hoping to create a new version that will use the Metro-style (or whatever Microsoft is calling it these days) of the new operating system. According to the team, the Kickstarter funds will allow current members of the VLC team to work on the Windows 8 version full-time while hiring professional designers to rework the user interface for Metro. Once the VLC team hits the 40,000 (around $64,100) goal, they expect to finish the port within three months.

One option for wirelessly browsing a home media library is thePlexapp, but an older way of piping video around a home network is the Video LAN Client (VLC). It seems like we’ve been waiting forever for an official build of VLC to land in the Play Store, and that day has finally come… for some people, anyway. First off, the build that just landed in the Store is for devices with ARMv7 NEON CPUs only. This includes most modern processors, like Tegra 3, Exynos, OMAP4, and Snapdragon S2, S3, and S4. If you have an older processor, like Tegra 2 or one that uses ARMv6 architecture, then a build for your device should be available “in a few days.”While this version is beta, it still supports all the features that users of VLC’s desktop software have come to expect, like playback of nearly any video or audio file, media library, support for multi-track audio and subtitles; as well as some mobile-specific goodies like auto-rotation, aspect ratio adjustments, and gestures to control volume
